Steps to Make a Terrarium

Once you have the following materials, you may now proceed with the steps:

Step #1: Pick Your Container

It is highly recommended to pick a large mouth container with a lid. A couple of suggestions would be glass candy jars, caregiver jars, giant mason jars, glass cookie jars (what other people usually use), or maybe giant pickle jars. You may additionally purchase a Wardian case, which sounds like miniature greenhouses, but it could cost you a lot.

The wide mouth container, of course, will make it easier to add plants to your terrarium. Also, do not choose a jar that’s too little for the house plants that you wish to add in your terrarium. Remember, the larger the jar, the bigger your selection and size of plants you can add. Don’t forget to make space for other ornamental designs such as shells, rocks, and figurines.

Step #2: Pick Your Terrarium Plants

The types of plants you select may vary depending on the container that you chose. Vessels that are fully closed need moisture-loving plants and moss. Containers that have a gap will hold succulents, cacti, and alternative houseplants. Make sure that your chosen plants grow slowly because if not, they’ll take over the whole container!

Look for plants that move in high humidity like ferns (spider ferns), starfish plant (can live well in low light), water plant moss, Joseph’s coat, and lastly, Moon Valley friendship plant.

Step #3: Crafting Time!

Much like a lasagna, crafting a terrarium needs you to create certain layer materials to make sure that the plants can get the right wetness in which water can be drained properly.

  • Layer one (bottom): Pebbles or stones to permit for drainage.
  • Layer two: activated charcoal at the top of the stones to avoid mold from developing within the terrarium.
  • Layer three: 1-2 inches of potting soil.
  • Layer four: Your plants—make sure that all of them have an equivalent light and moisture necessities.
  • Layer five (top): ornamental components like stones, figurines, or alternative inanimate objects. This section is optional and strictly for designing method only.

Not everybody has the time to create their DIY terrarium. There are lots of outlets and shops that sell a ready-made terrarium or terrarium kits that have everything you need to create a little enclosed garden. A terrarium is the perfect gift idea if the receiver is a plant-loving person.
