What Are the Benefits of CBD Products?

From cannabis to hemp, people are using different cannabis products for different purposes. For medical purposes, the most popular products are CBD oil and CBD capsules, which can be purchased in many health stores nowadays. Other than that, there is also CBD vape oil, which is used by people who want to stop smoking.

  1. What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant and accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. It has been reported to possess a wide range of therapeutic effects including antipsychotic (Zuardi et al., 1991; Leweke et al., 2000; Moreira et al., 2006), antidepressant (Zanelati et al., 2010), anti-epileptic (Devinsky et al., 2016) anti-inflammatory (Esposito et al., 2013), and analgesic properties (Boychuk et al., 2015), besides improving Parkinson’s disease symptoms (Chagas et al., 2014c).

(1) Anti-inflammatory effects

The topical application of a cannabidiol lotion has been shown to reduce inflammation and itching in patients with atopic dermatitis, which suggests that the compound could be effective against other inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis. A 2012 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reports that CBD products is also effective when applied topically to treat the inflammation caused by arthritis.

(2) Other benefits

Cannabidiol (CBD), the second most abundant component of cannabis, is receiving considerable attention in both the popular media and scientific literature for its anxiolytic, antipsychotic, antiemetic, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antidepressant properties. Evidence from animal studies shows that cannabidiol has a wide range of effects on the nervous system. In mice researched to date, it appears to be a remarkably safe drug with a very low toxicity profile. In humans, research suggests that this compound is not associated with any significant adverse side effects even when taken at relatively high doses. Therefore, these results suggest that CBD does not display the same type of side effects that have been observed with THC.

What are popular CBD products? CBD also appears to enhance the extinction of contextually conditioned fear responses. Extinction training involves repeated CS exposure in the absence of the US, leading to the formation of a new memory that inhibits fear responses and a decline in freezing over subsequent training sessions.

In this study, CBD was administered prior to extinction training, and 24 h later, testing was conducted in the absence of the drug. Compared to vehicle pretreatment, CBD administration 1 h before extinction training significantly enhanced extinction recall 24 h later.  This effect depended on CB1R activation but not 5-HT1AR stimulation.
